DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS FRIDAY 11th JULY 2008

WELCOME INVITATION

Dear Colleagues,

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Scottish Society of Physicians (SSP). This year the SSP has reached an important milestone as it will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Furthermore, the Society is particularly delighted to confirm that the Scottish Cardiac Society Annual Meeting will take place in parallel with the SSP in Glasgow.

In recognition of the SSP’s special anniversary, all the guest lectures will have a theme of fifty years’ progress on topics of high clinical relevance and interest to all physicians. Presentations will be given by a prestigious faculty recognised as experts in their field. The programme has also been awarded 8 clinical credits from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Scientific and audit communications are still an essential component of the Annual Scientific Meeting. May we encourage you to submit a paper, or stimulate your junior medical staff to present their research/audit work along with yourself. Details of how to submit abstracts are contained within this Announcement. The closing date for receipt of abstracts is Friday 11th July 2008.

Abstracts selected for oral presentation will be eligible for a SSP travel grant of up to £500 towards attendance at future scientific meetings. The best oral abstract presented by an individual who has not yet achieved consultant status will receive the ‘Fitzgerald-Peel Prize’ of £1000 for best scientific research. There will also be a ‘Best Poster Prize’ of £200.

In acknowledgment of its commitment to the ‘physicians of the future’, the SSP has undergone a period of modernisation and change and has revised its constitution to open membership of the Society to staff grades, associate specialists and also to specialist trainees (Registrar equivalents) in medical specialties. We hope to encourage trainees who ultimately become consultants in Scotland to actively support the concept of a general medical society of physicians. Feeding in a younger membership and enhancing the quality of meetings will help to secure the future of the SSP.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and at the Society Dinner for what we are sure will be not only an educational event but also a time for physicians of Scotland from different specialties to meet.
